VS Code extension

Every .gitignore, one click away

Gitignore Editor makes .gitignore files easy to manage in complex workspaces: monorepos, multi-root workspaces and submodules. It works in VS Code and in Google Antigravity.

It lists every .gitignore in your workspace in a sidebar, and adds any file or folder to the nearest one from the Explorer's right-click menu.

Source code

What it does

Sidebar view

Scans your workspace and lists every .gitignore file, grouped by where it lives.

Quick open

Click any .gitignore in the sidebar to open it.

From the Explorer

Right-click a file or folder to add it to a .gitignore, without opening one.

Nearest file

Finds the closest .gitignore to what you are ignoring, or offers to create one at the workspace root.

Tidy output

Skips duplicate entries and keeps line endings correct.

Global or specific

Right-click a file or folder in the Explorer and open the Gitignore submenu:

  1. Add File (Global): the file name, such as secret.key, ignored everywhere.
  2. Add File (Specific): its path, such as /src/config/secret.key, ignored only there.
  3. Add Folder (Global): the folder name, such as build/, ignored everywhere.
  4. Add Folder (Specific): its path, such as /client/build/, ignored only there.

Build it

Node and pnpm come from mise. Press F5 in VS Code to try it in a development window, or package it:

mise install
pnpm install
pnpm compile
pnpm package # gitignore-editor-*.vsix

Privacy

The extension runs entirely inside VS Code. It reads and writes the .gitignore files in your workspace and nothing else, makes no network requests, and keeps no telemetry or settings of its own.

This page stores only your light or dark choice, whether you hid the intro, and your answer to the notice, all on this device.
